The Department of Botany at Swami Shraddhanand College was established in 1967, with its Honours course introduced in 1989. The Department started with its first faculty member Dr. J. L. Bhat, former Principal, SSN College. Today this department has 13 Faculty members and 10 Laboratory staff. Faculty members are specialized in various fields like Microbial Biotechnology, Genomics, Nanotechnology, Environmental Microbiology, Plant Physiology, Pharmacology, Phytopathology, Reproductive Biology, Tissue Culture and other fields. Both teaching and research are inseparable components. Most faculty members have several years of teaching and research experience. The Department has been awarded research projects from various funding agencies like DBT, UGC, DU etc. which involved students from Honours and Life Science courses. The students of the Department are also involved in dissertation, which helps the young minds to create and practice knowledge.
Teachers inculcate interest in students towards research by conducting indepth practicals in well-endowed laboratories. The supportive and friendly attitude of teachers and lab staff create conducive environment for learning. Various audio-visual aids like demo-videos, short documentaries, models, pictures, powerpoint presentations etc. are used to impart knowledge to student in an efficient manner. The Department has three well equipped laboratories with LCD projector, one preparation room, one central facility instrumentation room and a Botanical Garden. For all round development of students, they are encouraged to participate in academic and extracurricular activities. Department also organizes Laboratory visit, Industrial visit, Botanical excursions from time to time, provide exposure and insight to students. An educational trip for B. Sc.(Hons) Botany students was organised by Department of Botany on 14 March 2023 to Mother Dairy Plant, Patparganj, Delhi. They learned about different stages of milk processing, right from the milk collection from the farmers. Students felt a sense of pride to learn about indigenous local brand of milk, which is working with international standards.
A three-day national conference on “Emerging Environmental Challenges and Sustainable Development-2018 (EECSD-2018)” was organized jointly by Department of Botany, Swami Shraddhanand College and Society for Environment and Development, India (SED-INDIA) from 21-23 March 2018. The EECSD-2018 coincides with three important International Environmental days, 21 March (World Forest Day), 22 March (World Water Day) and 23 March (World Meteorological Day).
EECSD-2018 was held at Sir Shankar Lal Concert Hall, University of Delhi. Several eminent scientists graced the occasion. Dr. Ram Boojh, Program Specialist, UNESCO, New Delhi, India, wasthe chief guest. For the remaining two days, conference washeld at Swami Shraddhanand College, University of Delhi.
The plenary speakers delivered the lectures on Biodiversity Conservation, Water-related Issues, Environmental Pollution and Management, Ethnobotany and Traditional Knowledge, Environmental Impact Assessment etc. 24 plenary lectures were delivered by renowned scientists and academicians.
Undergraduate students were immensely benefited and gained knowledge on the recent research work carried out on environmental issues.
