The Department of Microbiology was the first college to offer Honours program in Microbiology out of the six colleges in University of Delhi. It was established in 1987 at Swami Shraddhanand College. The Honours program of Microbiology at undergraduate level builds a strong knowledge base of the subject in the students, and acquaints them with the applied aspects of this fascinating discipline. It prepares the student for higher studies, start-ups, and/or eventual job in academia or industry.
Department of Microbiology has eight faculty members in the department, all of which have PhD degree. There is one Professor, two Associate Professors and five Assistant Professors in the department. The faculty members are specialized in the various fields of microbiology and have many years of teaching and research experience. The power-point presentations, videos, interactive sessions, seminars, problem solving and revision classes are being regularly used besides the conventional blackboard teaching as a part of teaching- learning pedagogy, with the goal of enhancing the competence of students and supporting them to make a mark in the future.The teacher-student ratio at the department is optimum and is as per the University rules. The pass percentage of the students has remained higher (more than 95%), suggesting an effective teaching- learning process at the department. Many students after completing their graduation opt for higher studies in reputed national and international research institutes and universities. Several of them are placed in different food, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, diagnostics industries and teaching institutes. A few others have opted in different streams later as per their choices.
Department of Microbiology has two well-furnished laboratories with the necessary equipments and infrastructure to perform practicals of the undergraduate students. Departmental Instrumentation Facility is ICT equipped with suitable infrastructure as per the Good Microbiological Laboratory Practices.
The sessions are frequently arranged for guidance by ex-students for providing their experiences to the ongoing batches for entrance exams, research career, and higher studies. These sessions by our illustrious alumni are extremely motivating and useful for current batches.
Besides the well managed and up-to-date main college library, the department also maintains a rich departmental library comprising of books gifted by teaching/non-teaching staff and ex- students for a quick reference. The books specific for the subject are also available for reference and borrowing that benefits both the faculty and the students. Our department with the help of our non-teaching staff gives the best possible platform to the incoming students to shape their careers well.
